Zimbra Collaboration Suite XSS Vulnerability CVE-2025-27915

Historical catalog analysis: CISA added this entry on October 07, 2025. The entry reflects catalog information retrieved on August 31, 2026, not a snapshot archived on the inclusion date. Check current vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CVE-2025-27915 is a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability identified in the Classic Web Client of the Synacor Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS). The flaw stems from insufficient sanitization of HTML content within ICS files. If a user views an email containing a malicious ICS entry, embedded JavaScript can execute via an ‘ontoggle’ event.

This execution occurs within the victim’s active session, which could allow an attacker to perform unauthorized actions. Specifically, this may include configuring email filters to redirect messages to an address controlled by the attacker, facilitating the unauthorized exfiltration of data.

Exposure and applicability

This vulnerability is applicable to healthcare providers, health plans, and business associates utilizing the Zimbra Collaboration Suite for professional communications. Because these platforms often handle protected health information (ePHI) and coordinate patient care, the ability for an attacker to silently redirect email traffic poses a significant risk to the confidentiality of patient data.

The attack vector is client-side; it requires a user to interact with a specially crafted email message. Organizations relying on the Classic Web Client are the primary point of exposure.

Remediation priorities

Based on our analysis, healthcare IT and security leaders should prioritize the following actions to reduce the likelihood of exploitation:

  1. Apply Vendor Mitigations: The primary priority is to implement the mitigations provided by Synacor. This addresses the root cause of insufficient sanitization in the Classic Web Client.
  2. Review Email Forwarding/Filtering Rules: Security administrators should audit existing email redirection rules across high-privilege accounts to ensure no unauthorized filters have already been established.
  3. User Awareness regarding ICS Files: While not a technical fix, informing clinical and administrative staff about the risks of interacting with unexpected calendar invites or ICS attachments from unknown sources could reduce the probability of initial execution.

How to validate remediation

To verify that exposure has been reduced, organizations should:
* Verify Version/Patch Status: Confirm through system administration logs that the vendor-recommended mitigations or patches have been successfully applied to all ZCS instances.
* Audit Configuration Changes: Review account settings for any unauthorized changes to email forwarding or filtering rules that would indicate a successful redirection attempt.

Note: We do not recommend performing active XSS injection tests on production medical communication systems, as this could disrupt patient care coordination. Validation should rely on version verification and configuration audits.

Limits and open questions

Applying the vendor’s mitigations is intended to address this specific XSS vector; however, it does not guarantee protection against all forms of cross-site scripting or other vulnerabilities within the ZCS ecosystem.

It remains unknown whether this vulnerability has been leveraged in active ransomware campaigns. Additionally, while CISA has established a deadline for federal agencies, this date is a regulatory requirement for those specific entities and not a legal mandate for private healthcare providers, though it serves as a useful benchmark for risk management.
