Authentication Bypass in Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile (EPMM)

Historical catalog analysis: CISA added this entry on May 19, 2025. The entry reflects catalog information retrieved on August 31, 2026, not a snapshot archived on the inclusion date. Check current vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CVE-2025-4427 is an authentication bypass vulnerability located within the API component of Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile (EPMM). The flaw stems from an insecure implementation of the Spring Framework open-source library. If exploited, this allows an attacker to use crafted API requests to access protected resources without providing valid credentials.

Exposure and applicability

This vulnerability is particularly relevant to U.S. healthcare providers and business associates who utilize Ivanti EPMM for mobile device management (MDM). In a clinical environment, MDM solutions are often used to secure tablets and smartphones that clinicians use to access electronic protected health information (ePHI) or manage medical applications.

Because the vulnerability allows unauthorized access to protected resources on the management server, it could potentially compromise the confidentiality and integrity of the managed endpoints. For healthcare security leaders, this represents a risk to the technical safeguards required under the HIPAA Security Rule regarding access control and device management.

Remediation priorities

Based on our analysis, organizations should prioritize the following actions to reduce their exposure:

  1. Inventory and Version Verification: IT administrators should immediately identify all instances of Ivanti EPMM in use across the clinical and administrative network to determine if they are running a vulnerable version.
  2. Vendor Mitigation Deployment: Following the identification of vulnerable systems, security teams should apply the mitigations provided by Ivanti. This is the primary method for addressing the insecure Spring Framework implementation.
  3. Access Review: While applying patches, security leaders should review API access logs for any anomalous requests that may indicate attempted unauthorized access to protected resources.

How to validate remediation

To verify that the risk has been reduced, organizations should employ the following methods:

  • Version Confirmation: Confirm through the management console or system logs that the applied update or mitigation matches the vendor’s recommended secure version/configuration.
  • Configuration Audit: Verify that the API component is operating under the updated security parameters defined in the vendor’s advisory.

Note: We do not recommend performing intrusive penetration testing or unauthorized API requests against production management servers, as this could disrupt clinical operations and device connectivity. Validation should be coordinated with clinical engineering to ensure patient care continuity.

Limits and open questions

It is currently unknown whether this vulnerability has been utilized in ransomware campaigns. Additionally, while applying vendor mitigations reduces the likelihood of exploitation, it does not guarantee total immunity from all threats targeting the EPMM infrastructure. Organizations should continue to monitor for further guidance regarding the Spring Framework implementation within their specific environment.
