Addressing Remote Code Execution Risks in Progress WhatsUp Gold

Historical catalog analysis: CISA added this entry on March 03, 2025. The entry reflects catalog information retrieved on August 31, 2026, not a snapshot archived on the inclusion date. Check current vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CVE-2024-4885 is a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) identified in Progress WhatsUp Gold. This flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker to achieve remote code execution (RCE). Because this vulnerability has been added to CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog as of March 3, 2025, it is recognized as a risk that has been observed in active exploitation.

Exposure and applicability

Progress WhatsUp Gold is used for network monitoring. In healthcare environments, such tools are often deployed to maintain visibility over critical infrastructure, including servers hosting electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI) and the connectivity of medical devices.

An unauthenticated RCE vulnerability in a network management tool is particularly significant because these systems typically possess broad access across different network segments to perform monitoring tasks. If compromised, such a tool could potentially be used as a pivot point to reach sensitive clinical systems or disrupt patient care operations.

Remediation priorities

Based on the reported risk, we analyze the following priority actions for healthcare IT and security leaders:

  1. Inventory and Version Verification: Identify all instances of Progress WhatsUp Gold within the environment. Security administrators should compare current versions against the vendor’s June 2024 security bulletin to determine if the installation is affected.
  2. Apply Vendor Mitigations: Prioritize the application of official patches or mitigations provided by Progress. This is the primary method for reducing the likelihood of initial compromise via this path traversal flaw.
  3. Network Segmentation Review: For organizations unable to patch immediately, we suggest reviewing network access controls. Restricting access to the WhatsUp Gold management interface to authorized administrative workstations only could reduce the attack surface available to unauthenticated remote actors.
  4. Cloud Service Audit: Organizations utilizing cloud-based deployments of this software should review their configurations in alignment with BOD 22-01 guidance where applicable.

How to validate remediation

To verify that exposure has been reduced, organizations should employ the following methods:

  • Version Confirmation: Document and verify that the installed version matches or exceeds the patched version specified in the vendor’s security bulletin. This provides evidence that the specific code flaw has been addressed.
  • Access Control Validation: Use authorized network scanning tools to confirm that the management interface is not reachable from untrusted or public-facing network segments.

Note: We do not recommend performing intrusive penetration testing or attempting to trigger the path traversal vulnerability on production systems, as this could impact clinical operational stability. All validation should be coordinated with clinical engineering and IT leadership.

Limits and open questions

While patching addresses the known vulnerability, it does not eliminate all residual risks associated with network monitoring tools, such as credential theft or misconfigurations. It remains unknown whether this specific vulnerability has been utilized in ransomware campaigns. Furthermore, while CISA has set a remediation deadline of March 24, 2025, for covered federal agencies, private healthcare providers must determine their own patching timelines based on their internal risk management processes and HIPAA Security Rule obligations.
