Command Execution Risk in N-able N-Central (CVE-2025-8875)

Historical catalog analysis: CISA added this entry on August 13, 2025. The entry reflects catalog information retrieved on August 31, 2026, not a snapshot archived on the inclusion date. Check current vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CVE-2025-8875 is an insecure deserialization vulnerability identified in N-able N-Central. This flaw could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the system. Because Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) tools typically possess high-level administrative privileges across a network, a compromise of this tool could provide a pathway for unauthorized access to sensitive systems.

Exposure and applicability

This vulnerability is particularly relevant to U.S. healthcare providers, practices, and business associates who utilize N-able N-Central for IT management, either internally or through a Managed Service Provider (MSP).

In a healthcare context, RMM tools are often used to maintain servers, workstations, and medical office infrastructure. If an attacker achieves command execution via this vulnerability, they could potentially access environments containing electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI) or disrupt the operational resilience of clinical systems. Organizations should verify whether their current IT management stack includes N-able N-Central and determine if it is deployed in a cloud or on-premises configuration.

Remediation priorities

Based on our analysis, healthcare security leaders and their IT partners should prioritize the following actions to reduce risk:

  1. Vendor Mitigation Application: The primary priority is to apply the mitigations provided by N-able. For those using cloud services, following guidance aligned with BOD 22-01 may be applicable.
  2. MSP Coordination: Healthcare entities that outsource IT operations to an MSP should formally request confirmation that CVE-2025-8875 has been addressed across all management consoles serving the organization.
  3. Service Evaluation: In scenarios where mitigations are unavailable or cannot be applied due to legacy constraints, organizations should evaluate whether to discontinue use of the product to eliminate the attack vector.

How to validate remediation

To verify that exposure has been reduced, organizations can employ the following methods:

  • Version Verification: Confirm that the N-Central installation matches the version specified in the vendor’s mitigation guidance (e.g., checking for the availability of version 2025.3.1 or subsequent updates).
  • Configuration Audit: For cloud-managed environments, review service status reports from the provider to ensure the vulnerability has been patched at the platform level.

Note that while version checks indicate a patch has been applied, they do not guarantee that the system is entirely secure from other vectors.

Limits and open questions

It remains unknown whether this vulnerability has been exploited by ransomware campaigns. Additionally, while CISA has established a remediation deadline of August 20, 2025, for federal agencies, this date serves as a risk indicator rather than a legal requirement for private healthcare providers.

Residual risk remains if the RMM tool is integrated with other high-privilege accounts without strict segmentation. Organizations should continue to monitor vendor communications for updates regarding the effectiveness of the current mitigations.
