Chromium Out-of-Bounds Memory Access Vulnerability (CVE-2025-14174)

Historical catalog analysis: CISA added this entry on December 12, 2025. The entry reflects catalog information retrieved on August 31, 2026, not a snapshot archived on the inclusion date. Check current vendor guidance before acting.

What the vulnerability is

CVE-2025-14174 is an out-of-bounds memory access vulnerability located in the ANGLE (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine) component of Google Chromium. According to CISA, this flaw could allow a remote attacker to execute out-of-bounds memory access if a user visits a specially crafted HTML page.

Exposure and applicability

Because Chromium serves as the foundation for numerous web browsers, the exposure extends beyond Google Chrome to other derivative browsers, including Microsoft Edge and Opera.

In healthcare environments, these browsers are primary endpoints used by clinical staff and administrators to access electronic protected health information (ePHI), patient portals, and cloud-based health records. Any vulnerability that allows remote memory access via a web page presents a risk to the confidentiality and integrity of data handled on those workstations. CISA has added this vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog as of December 12, 2025.

Remediation priorities

Our analysis suggests prioritizing updates based on the criticality of the workstation’s role in patient care and data access. We recommend the following prioritized actions:

  1. Immediate Patching of Clinical Workstations: Prioritize updating browsers on machines used for ePHI access to the latest versions provided by the respective vendors (Google, Microsoft, etc.).
  2. Administrative Endpoint Updates: Ensure that billing, scheduling, and health plan administration terminals are updated to eliminate the entry path.
  3. Vendor Verification: For healthcare organizations using managed browser environments or specialized medical software that bundles a Chromium-based browser, verify with the vendor if their specific implementation is affected and if a patch is available.

How to validate remediation

To reduce exposure, administrators should verify that the installed browser versions meet or exceed the patched versions specified in the vendor’s security advisories.

While version checks are a necessary first step, they do not guarantee total security against all threats. Validation should be integrated into existing endpoint management reports to ensure no legacy or “shadow IT” browsers remain unpatched across the clinical network.

Limits and open questions

It remains unknown whether this vulnerability has been utilized in ransomware campaigns. Additionally, while CISA has set a remediation deadline of January 2, 2026, for federal agencies, this date is not a legal requirement for private healthcare providers, though it serves as a benchmark for risk management.

Organizations should note that because different vendors (e.g., Microsoft vs. Google) release updates on different schedules, the specific patched version number will vary by browser.
